Hands-On Learning Opportunities
Externships
The externship program at Hofstra Law offers our students the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of legal fields under the direct supervision of experienced practitioners. In addition to civil and criminal externships, Hofstra Law offers specialty externships through our Clinical Prosecution Practicum and Pro Bono Scholars Program.
Fellowships
Hofstra Law attracts students from around the country for its fellowships and scholarships. Most include a summer internship, stipend, and opportunities to interact with leading scholars and practitioners. Fellowship and scholarship opportunities are offered in areas including business law, child and family advocacy, legal tech, social justice, advanced legal research and writing, LGBTQIA+ rights, immigration, and environmental law.
Pro Bono Work
Pro bono work provides Hofstra Law students with valuable experience at the intersection between legal theory and practice. Our students have the opportunity to provide pro bono services in the community with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and private law firms or practitioners.
Study Abroad
Hofstra Law’s study abroad programs are designed to introduce students to a broad array of transnational legal issues. Each program includes courses that focus on international or comparative law, as well as extensive interaction with local students, faculty, and members of the local legal community.
Journals
Writing for one of Hofstra Law’s five nationally recognized journals is a great resume builder, especially if it relates to your area of study. Students are eligible to join a journal after their first year of law school and must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, make a strong showing in a writing competition, or submit an article of publishable quality.
Advocacy and Trial Practice
Hofstra Law is ranked eighth in the nation for its trial advocacy program according to U.S. News & World Report. Through a series of student advocacy organizations, including Mock Trial, Moot Court Board, and Dispute Resolution Society, and the Center for Legal Advocacy, Hofstra Law is preparing future lawyers and leaders who are practice-ready.

The Academic Success Program is one of your most valuable resources from the time you begin law school to the time you sit for the bar exam. It offers guides and skills workshops, helping students develop and refine analytical and writing skills that are vital for continued success in law school and professional practice, as well as providing postgraduation support to ensure our students are prepared to pass the bar exam.
