The mission of BLSA is to utilize the collective resources of its members to acknowledge the educational, professional, political, and social goals of Black law students. The Veterans Legal Assistance Project (VLAP) is a Veterans Law Student Association initiative that provides free legal services to military veterans across a wide range of civil matters. FCR is a peer-reviewed, quarterly journal published under the auspices of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC). FCR is an international, interdisciplinary family law journal, a forum for the exchange of ideas, programs, research, legislation, case law, and reforms. The journal’s editorial staff is based at the Law School. Its fundamental premise is that productive discussion of family law is facilitated by a dialogue among the judiciary, lawyers, mediators, and mental health and social services communities. The Hofstra Law Review is the flagship student-edited legal journal of the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. Since its first issue published in 1973, the Law Review has been issued quarterly and has established itself as a highly regarded publication, consistently ranked among leading national law reviews.

Membership on the Law Review is one of the highest academic honors at Hofstra Law and is determined through a competitive selection process based on academic achievement or performance in the annual writing competition. Student editors are responsible for every stage of the publication process, including article solicitation and selection, cite checking, and substantive editing.

The Law Review publishes scholarly articles, essays, and notes written by professors, judges, practitioners, and students, contributing to important legal discourse on a wide range of subjects. DRS is dedicated to advancing students’ skills in negotiation, mediation, and arbitration through competitions, seminars, and workshops. By focusing on problem-solving outside of the courtroom, DRS enables students to work directly with opposing parties to reach equitable solutions and thus build ingenuity, creativity, and practical lawyering skills.

Each year, DRS hosts an intramural competition, through which members are selected, and the organization proudly represents Hofstra Law in regional and national tournaments. In addition to preparing students for practice in dispute resolution, participation in DRS enhances the overall value of a legal education by equipping members with essential skills that are highly sought after in the workforce.

HTAA is a student-run organization devoted to developing students’ trial advocacy skills, including conducting direct and cross-examinations of witnesses, as well as delivering opening statements and closing arguments before a jury. Each semester, HTAA hosts an intramural trial advocacy competition open to all members of the Hofstra Law community. These competitions are judged by HTAA executive board members and faculty advisors, with final rounds presided over by sitting judges and practicing attorneys.
Students who demonstrate outstanding skill in these intramural competitions are invited to join HTAA. Members then have the opportunity to try out for Hofstra Law’s interscholastic mock trial teams, which compete in prestigious regional and national tournaments. These teams are coached by practicing attorneys, many of whom are Hofstra Law alumni, and select competitors may earn course credit for their participation.
Through its competitions and training, HTAA offers students invaluable opportunities to sharpen advocacy skills, gain courtroom experience, and prepare for success as trial lawyers.

The Moot Court Board is a student-run organization dedicated to developing students’ written and oral appellate advocacy skills. Each spring, the Board hosts an intramural competition through which new members are selected. Board members play a central role in preparing competitors for oral argument, conducting practice rounds, and judging preliminary rounds. The final round is adjudicated by a panel of distinguished judges and appellate practitioners.

In addition to its intramural program, the Board is integral to Hofstra Law’s interscholastic moot court teams. Each fall, the Board organizes tryouts to select students who will represent Hofstra Law in regional, national, and international competitions. Board members also assist with the faculty-taught Advanced Appellate Skills seminar, offered exclusively to students chosen through these tryouts — many of whom are active Board members — who go on to compete successfully against law schools nationwide.

CAP is a pro bono program that gives students the opportunity to provide vital legal assistance to domestic violence survivors seeking orders of protection in Family Court. Under supervision and after training, student advocates help clients complete petitions and prepare for court appearances, then accompany them before a judge.

Through this hands-on experience, participants gain valuable advocacy skills while making a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals. The program also fosters a commitment to public service and pro bono work that students can carry throughout their legal careers.

UAC is a student-run, pro bono organization that provides free legal assistance to individuals who have been denied unemployment benefits. Student advocates are trained to represent claimants in hearings before the New York State Department of Labor, helping them prepare their cases, present evidence, and argue on their behalf.

Participation in UAC gives Hofstra Law students invaluable hands-on advocacy experience while offering critical support to members of the community navigating the unemployment system. By combining legal training with public service, UAC reflects Hofstra Law’s commitment to justice and access to legal representation.
