Approval Process


Any student who has completed a full year of law school is eligible to apply for externship approval.

A student who is on academic probation may not participate in any externship program without the written permission of the Director of the Academic Success Program, who will consult with the Dean for Experiential Programs prior to making his or her decision.

Students may apply for externship credit for multiple semesters but should do so only after reviewing the Rules for Election of Non-Classroom Courses, which can be found in the Student Handbook (PDF)

International students who wish to participate in the Externship Program should consult with the University’s Office of International Student Affairs to ensure compliance with visa requirements.

Required Forms

After securing a placement, a student seeking externship credit should complete a Request for Field Placement Approval (PDF) and return the completed form with a copy of their transcript to Franca Sachs, assistant dean for experiential programs, in Room 203B or by email.

Students will also need to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (PDF) and ask that their field placement supervisor sign the form as well.

Once a student has submitted both the Request for Approval and the Memorandum of Understanding, the student will be approved to register for the appropriate externship seminar.

Field placements in corporate in-house legal departments or other for-profit entities are permitted on a limited basis and with administrative approval.


These forms must be submitted before the end of the add/drop period indicated in the registration materials.
