Purpose
Our mission as the BLSA chapter at Hofstra University is to promote the educational needs and goals of black law students at Hofstra University. It strives to foster and encourage professional competence within its membership through various academic and career workshops, sponsoring special programs which include: a speaker series, an alumni reception, community outreach efforts, and an orientation for incoming minority students. At all times, BLSA chooses to exemplify genuine character, integrity and leadership qualities that will radically transform the internal and external communities that it diligently seeks to serve.![]() |
Our History
In order to fully appreciate the purposeful goal of BLSA to serve one must take a moment to understand the great history from which our illustrious chapter stems.
The Hofstra Chapter of the BLSA is but a small element of the larger vision of one man, Algernon Johnson "A.J." Cooper, former mayor of Prichard Alabama who created the very first chapter of BLSA in 1968. In our long history spanning over four decades BLSA has made leaps and bounds toward achieving one unwavering goal: the sensitization of the legal profession to the needs of the Black community.
By becoming a member of the Hofstra Chapter of BLSA you will become a part of the legacy of the National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA) the largest student run organization in America encompassing 200 law school chapters throughout the country, representing upwards of 6,000 law school students, and fostering international relationships with law school students from Canada, Puerto Rico, England and South Africa.
The history of BLSA is rich and our mission for positive social impact is as strong as ever!
