Energy and Environmental Law

Energy and Environmental Law

In a world facing heightened environmental and economic challenges, environmental and energy law have taken on a renewed importance.

Environmental law has evolved from common law doctrines that seek to protect people and property from harm by the detrimental actions of others to a complex body of local, state, federal and international regulations interpreted by administrative and judicial bodies at all levels. Global climate change has inextricably linked traditional environmental law in the areas of air, waste, and water with law and policy in the areas of energy, natural resource consumption and land use.

Both energy and environmental law are practiced across a broad spectrum of professional contexts. Environmental and energy law practitioners represent government, corporate or not-for-profit clients. They may, for example, encounter environmental issues in commercial transactions, work on complex energy finance projects, litigate the allocation of legal liability for damage to the environment, or advance policy through the drafting and enforcement of regulation.

Hofstra offers numerous resources to guide and support students interested in developing careers in environmental and energy law. The Energy & Environmental Law Concentration outlines educational, extracurricular, and work experiences integral for entering the energy and environmental fields and the information on this site provides students with assistance in obtaining those experiences.
