Biography

After 20 years in the New York State Court System, on February 1, 2016, Mr. Kiernan assumed the position of Director of Pilot Projects for the Center for Children, Families and the Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law, where he assists Judge Gail Prudenti, the Center’s executive director, in all phases of the operation, structure and development of the Center. Mr. Kiernan also sits on the Center’s Executive Board.

In addition, he serves as the Faculty Administrative Editor of the Family Court Review, a peer-reviewed quarterly journal published under the auspices of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. The Family Court Review serves as an international interdisciplinary communication forum for judges, attorneys, mediators and professionals in mental health and human services who are concerned with the improvement of all aspects of the family court system.  The journal’s editorial staff is selected each year through a writing competition conducted in cooperation with the Hofstra Law journals.

Mr. Kiernan is also an adjunct professor and teaches the FCR Seminar, where the junior staff, among other things, are required to author their own note, the best of which are published in the journal.

In August of 2017, Mr. Kiernan was appointed Associate Dean of Academic Operations and, as such, is responsible for a wide range of administrative duties crucial to the operation of the law school.

Before joining Hofstra Law, Mr. Kiernan was the Special Counsel to the Chief Administrative Judge of the Courts of New York State, where his advice was sought on a variety of issues involved in the administration and operation of a court system with 3,600 judges, 15,000 nonjudicial personnel and an annual budget in excess of $2 billion.

Before that, he served for over 10 years in the Appellate Division for the Second Judicial Department, where he attained the position as Clerk of the Court, the highest-ranking nonjudicial employee in one of the busiest appellate courts in the United States.

Mr. Kiernan has been a frequent lecturer throughout the metropolitan area, including seminars sponsored by the New York State Bar Association, the Unified Court System, the Nassau and Suffolk bar associations and the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
