International Moot Arbitration Team

The Hofstra International Moot Arbitration Team (IMAT) is a group of students devoted to the study of international commercial law and arbitration for resolution of international business disputes. The increasing preference of the business community for arbitration to resolve international commercial disputes is the reason this method of dispute resolution is used as a clinical tool to train law students.

The students work together in teams to prepare for the Willem C. Vis Moot International Moot Arbitration Competition, held each spring in Vienna, Austria and Hong Kong. The competition has two phases: the writing of memoranda for claimant and respondent, and the hearing of oral arguments based upon the memoranda. Thus, the training involves forensic and written exercises required to determine questions of contract, and oral advocacy exercises to effectively advocate for a side in the arbitration. The oral competition in Vienna and Hong Kong is judged by some of the leading practitioners of arbitration in the world.

The Vis Moot competition trains law leaders of tomorrow in methods of alternative dispute resolution.
