HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Throughout the semester the Maurice A. Deane School of Law's trial advocacy teams have achieved great success in several competitions. On October 27, Hofstra Law won the Peter James Johnson National Civil Rights Trial Competition at St. John's University School of Law. The team of three students, Jana McNulty 3L, Kaitlyn Flynn 3L and Eleni Aristodemou 3L, went undefeated during the tournament, winning every ballot.

The only national civil rights trial competition in the country, the four-day Peter James Johnson Competition offers law students from up to 16 law schools throughout the country an opportunity to try a civil rights case in an actual courtroom setting before prominent jurists and trial attorneys.

On November 2-3, the Hofstra Law team of Aaron Spurlock 2L, Michael Manfredi 3L, Donald Kernisant 4L (Part-Time Program) and Ryan Lynady 3L were semifinalists in the ABA Criminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition. The 14th annual competition was co-sponsored by the Criminal Justice Section of the American Bar Association and Quinnipiac University School of Law.

On November 23-24, Hofstra Law competed in the ABA's Labor and Employment Trial Advocacy Competition, finishing runner-up in the 16-school competition. The team was composed of Kimberly Page 3L, Matthew Perry 2L, Nicole Guliano 3L and Mathew Feldman 3L. The competition offers students a forum to develop the skills they will be using as practitioners and a chance to meet and network with labor and employment law practitioners.

The trial teams are coached by adjunct professors Lee Bergstein, Gerard McCloskey '08, Elizabeth Quinn '05 and David Smith '05, under the supervision of Professor Barbara Barron '84, director of student advocacy programs, and Adjunct Professor Jared Rosenblatt '03, faculty advisor to the Hofstra Trial Advocacy Association (HTAA). Recent graduates Alexi Poulianos '11 and Laura Kitchen '12 also advised the teams.
