Five Hofstra Law Students Selected for the Elite Equal Justice Works Summer Corps Program

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Five Hofstra Law students who are working for public interest organizations over the summer have been selected as members of the prestigious Equal Justice Works Summer Corps, an AmeriCorps-funded program. Summer Corps participants provide critically needed legal assistance to low-income and underserved communities in the United States.

“It is a credit to our students that their efforts have been recognized and supported by Equal Justice Works,” said Eric Lane, interim dean and Eric J. Schmertz Distinguished Professor of Public Law and Public Service. “Their commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others through public service is inspirational to the Hofstra Law community, as well as their families, friends and communities at large.”

Every year, Summer Corps provides funding to law students who spend their summers working with nonprofit public interest organizations that deliver legal services to those who need it most. This year, the program will provide 711 students with $1,175 in educational awards for working on approved projects. Last summer, 700 law students were selected to participate in participated in the program.

The Hofstra Law students chosen for the 2012 EJW Summer Corps are: 

Tanya Mir (Class of 2013) — Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Bethpage, N.Y.

Allison Mussen (2013) — The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Utica, N.Y.

Anand Sinha (2013) — City Bar Justice Center, New York, N.Y.

Geoff Kagan Trenchard (2014) — Brooklyn Family Defense Project, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Susan Varghese (2013) — City Bar Justice Center, New York, N.Y.
