HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Four Hofstra Law students will spend the summer working at public interest organizations as a part of the Equal Justice Works (EJW) Summer Corps, an AmeriCorps funded program. Summer Corps participants provide critically needed legal assistance to low-income and underserved communities in the United States on a broad range of issue areas.

"We are very proud of our students and their demonstrated commitment to serving the public interest," said Dean Nora V. Demleitner. "It is a great honor to be a part of the EJW Summer Corps. That these students donate their time and talents in exchange for a modest educational award is a testament to their dedication to public service and making lasting differences in the lives of others."

Each summer, Summer Corps connects law students around the country with organizations that deliver legal services to those who need it most.  This year it will provide 577 law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,000 award voucher for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization. In the summer of 2009, 373 law students participated in the program.

The Hofstra Law students chosen for the 2010 EJW Summer Corps are:

Hannah Fleury (2011) - Nassau Suffolk Law Services, Inc., Islandia, N.Y.

Joey Pegram (2012) - The Children's Law Center, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Aara Shaikh (2012) - Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, New York, N.Y.

Le-el Sinai (2012) - New York Center for Law & Justice, New York, N.Y.
