U.S. District Judge John Gleeson Speaks at Hofstra Law School
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — U.S. District Judge John Gleeson recently spoke to a packed house at Hofstra Law School on: "The Sentencing Commission And Prosecutorial Discretion: The Role of the Courts in Policing Sentence Bargains."
In his February 13 speech, Judge Gleeson recommended that prosecutors be given the discretion to reach sentence bargains with defendants, even if the agreed-upon sentence is outside the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. His speech was the subject of an article in the
New York Law Journal on Feb. 14, written by Vesselin Mitev, a member of Hofstra Law's Class of 2008.
Judge Gleeson spoke as part of the annual Kaplan Memorial Lecture, the goal of which is to bring jurists of distinction and prominence to the Law School to address students, faculty, alumni and the legal community on important and timely legal issues.
