Center Projects

At Hofstra Law, we are never satisfied with
the status quo.

We are constantly challenging our faculty and students to broaden their knowledge of family law to improve policy and law. The Center for Children, Families and the Law is at the forefront of court reform, with several ongoing initiatives.

The Center is a leader in national divorce reform efforts. We were instrumental in drafting the Model Standards of Practice for Family Divorce and Mediation, which provides a framework for problem-solving through negotiation.

A joint project co-sponsored by the Center and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts led to a reexamination of the family law curriculum at law schools around the country, incorporating alternatives to litigation, interdisciplinary knowledge and essential lawyering skills.

And we’ve partnered with the New York State Permanent Judicial Commission on Justice for Children on its ongoing efforts to keep kids in school — and out of court — while hosting conferences and symposiums aimed at developing best practices in family dynamics. Hofstra Law also hosts hearings of the Nassau County Youth Court and engages in ongoing research and policy advocacy.

In preparing students to practice once they are admitted, as well as to work in Hofstra Law’s many clinical programs, we offer such cutting-edge courses as Modern Divorce Advocacy, Legal Decision Making for Children and Incompetent Adults, International Family Law, Child Abuse and Neglect, and Domestic Violence Seminar.
