Biography

Kenneth J. Balkan was admitted to practice law in New York in 1973, and he has concentrated his practice in the areas of ethics and professionalism, the representation of attorneys in disciplinary proceedings, professional liability defense, and insurance coverage analysis. Mr. Balkan was a founding partner of the Garden City, New York law firm of L’Abbate, Balkan, Colavita & Contini, L.L.P. for which law firm he presently serves in a capacity as Counsel to the Firm.

Mr. Balkan joined Hofstra University School of Law in 2008 in an adjunct capacity of Special Professor of Law teaching Lawyers’ Ethics. In addition to having authored articles on Professional Liability, Mr. Balkan has lectured at New York State Bar Association and Nassau County Bar Association programs and seminars on Ethics & Professionalism, and professional liability. Mr. Balkan is a former chair of the Professional Ethics Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association, he served on the Committee of Professional Discipline of the New York State Bar Association, and had been appointed as an Administrative Judge to the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor.

Mr. Balkan received his Juris Doctorate from St. John’s University School of Law in 1972, where he was a member of the Law Review. He is admitted to practice before the Courts of the State of New York, the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He presently serves as a Mediator for both the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, as an Arbitrator to the 10th Judicial District Nassau County, Part 137 Attorney/Client Fee Dispute Resolution Program, and he has also served in Court appointed positions of Court Evaluator and Referee.
