Most externship placements are in government agencies and public interest or nonprofit institutions, but the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University allows placement in corporations and other for-profit entities on a limited basis and with faculty/administrative approval.
The most common placements are judicial, criminal and civil externships, or with governmental and private agencies that have legal components.
In addition to the more traditional placements with judges, prosecutors, public defenders and legal services, we also have specialized offerings, such as the matrimonial law externship, the insurance law externship and the Clinical Prosecution Practicum.
When students work for corporate offices or private firms, it is generally to do work not typically available through a nonprofit operation; the most common example is in the entertainment industry.
