Hofstra Law Students Succeed in International Moot Arbitration Competitions

Hofstra Law School, Hempstead, N.Y. —

For the second year in a row, Hofstra Law students were recognized in the category for “Best Memorandum on Behalf of Respondent” at Vis East, held in Hong Kong.

Vis East is the sister moot competition to the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, the prestigious annual international moot court competition in Vienna, Austria, which attracts more than 1,500 students, lawyers and professors from around the world.

Hofstra Law Student Timothy Schmidt ‘09 of Queens, New York, also received an Honorable Mention for his individual oral arguments at the Vienna competition, ranking him in the Top 15% of more than 500 oralists.

Combined, the two competitions included teams from over 200 universities and 60 countries including Australia, China, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan and USA.  New York City area schools participating included Cardozo Law School, Columbia Law School, Fordham Law School and New York University School of Law.

“I’m very proud of Timothy and the entire team,” said Special Professor of Law Seth A. Presser ‘07, who served as the team’s coach.  “Without his fellow students’ research, their constant mooting, critiques, and helpful criticism, Mr. Schmidt would not likely have been so successful.  As such, the entire team deserves to be proud, brief writers and oralists alike.”

Hofstra’s Vis International Moot Arbitration Team members also included Adam Bobkin ’10, Timothy G. Burroughs ’10, Heather J. Canning ’09, Lisa Fortin ’10, Sonia Gassan ’10, Erika A. Gray ’10, Ashley E. Lorance ’10, Adam Marshall ’09, Meghan L. Rudy ’09, Aigul E. Sarvarova ’08, Leah E. Saxtein ’10, Vanesa Sigala ’10 and Moshe Y. Singer ’10.
