National Center for Law and Economic Justice Recognizes Hofstra Law Professor John DeWitt Gregory

Hofstra Law School, Hempstead, N.Y. —

John DeWitt Gregory, Sidney and Walter Siben Distinguished Professor of Family Law at Hofstra, will be honored by the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ) at its annual awards dinner on June 2, 2009 at Chelsea Piers’ The Lighthouse in New York City.

Fellow honorees include Michael D. Fricklas, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Viacom, Inc. and Sondra Youdelman, Executive Director of Community Voices Heard. 

“I am thrilled to be included among this distinguished group” said Professor Gregory.  “I have been a proud member of the NCLEJ Board of Directors since 1985.”

Professor Gregory is currently Vice- Chair of the NCLEJ Board of Directors, a member of the Executive and Audit Committees and Co- Chair of the Nominating Committee.  The mission of NCLEJ is to advance the cause of economic justice for low-income families, individuals and communities across the country.

A former Vice Dean of Hofstra Law, Professor Gregory teaches primarily in the areas of animal law as well as matrimonial and family law.  He is an elected member of the American Law Institute, and served as an adviser to the Institute's Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution:  Analysis and Recommendations.

Professor Gregory is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the New York Bar Foundation, and a member of the board of editors of the Family Law Quarterly.  He is author of “The Law of Equitable Distribution; Understanding Family Law” (with Swisher & Scheible); and “Property Division in Divorce Proceedings:  A Fifty State Guide” (with Richards and Wolf) and he has written extensively in the areas of juvenile law, family law and constitutional law.  He is a former Chair of the Section on Family and Juvenile Law of the Association of American Law Schools and of the Section on Minority Groups.

Professor Gregory holds a B.A. from Howard University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
