Hofstra Law Students Help Immigrants Gain Citizenship

Hofstra Law School, Hempstead, N.Y. —

Hofstra Law students will volunteer to help eligible immigrants complete paperwork to become U.S. citizens during the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Long Island “Citizenship Day” at Hofstra Law School on Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Rooms 230 and 238.  

In anticipation of that day, Hofstra Law School is also hosting “Hofstra Citizenship Day” on Friday, March 27, from noon to 5 p.m. in Room 242, to assist immigrant members of the Hofstra University community become naturalized.

Hofstra Law School’s Chapter of Amnesty International, the South Asian Law Students Association, the Black Law Students Association and the Asian Pacific Islander Law Student Association are sponsoring the projects.

During “Hofstra Citizenship Day,” law students, under the supervision of Professor Lauris Wren, will help members of the Hofstra community (employees, students and their friends and families) fill out applications for citizenship and counsel them on the application process.

“In a year when some immigrants have faced great adversity on Long Island, our goal is for Hofstra Law School to stand with our immigrant neighbors and give them hope and assistance,” said Hofstra Law student Sara Ali, who is spearheading the project.

Lauris Wren, Hofstra Law Associate Clinical Professor and Attorney-in-Charge of the Political Asylum Clinic, is the Director of “Citizenship Day.”  “Hofstra Law School recognizes the great contributions immigrants make to our community, culture, region and nation,” she said.  “We are delighted to help immigrants fulfill their dreams of becoming American citizens.”
