Karlie S. Clemons wins Hofstra Law “Green” writing competition

Hofstra Law School, Hempstead, N.Y. —

Karlie S. Clemons of Lake Wales, Florida, a third-year law student at Florida State University is the winner of the nationwide “Energy and the Environment” writing competition sponsored by Hofstra Law School, WRM America and Congdon, Flaherty, O’Callaghan, Reid, Donlon, Travis & Fishlinger.  Clemons will receive $500.

Clemons’ paper “Potable, Fresh Water Versus Climate Preservation: Can Florida Justify an Increased Use of Desalination Given Florida’s Vulnerability To Climate Change and Current (and Anticipated) Policies?” analyzes whether desalination is a viable option for Florida given the state’s climate change policies and future federal legislation.

“Ms. Clemons wrote an outstanding paper,” said James E. Hickey, Jr., Professor of Law at Hofstra and Director of the Writing Competition.  “She provided a thorough analysis of a critical environmental issue facing Florida.”

The writing contest was held in conjunction with the “Energy and the Environment:  Empowering Consumers” conference set for March 19 and 20, 2009, also sponsored by Hofstra Law School, WRM America and Congdon, Flaherty, O'Callaghan, Reid, Donlon, Travis & Fishlinger.

The interdisciplinary conference will cover the rights and duties of consumers, the consequences of their energy consumption choices and the implications of their environmental demands and responsibilities.

The conference will examine some of the most important legal, factual, political and ethical considerations in the evolving role of the energy and environmental consumer.  Visit law.hofstra.edu/Environment for more information.  A live webcast of the conference can be viewed on Hofstra Law’s webchannel law.hofstra.edu/webcast.
