The lecture is titled “Legal Issues Facing the United Nations:  The Perspective of a Former U.N. Legal Counsel.”  Corell will speak about the need for reform of the Security Council and legal accountability problems when U.N. personnel on missions violate the law.

“It is an honor and privilege to host Ambassador Hans Corell, a born leader who has dedicated his life to public service.  His long-standing expertise, fierce intellect and deep insights reflect a deep commitment to the rule of law and a global legal system,” said Dean Demleitner.

From 1962 to 1972, Hans Corell served in the Swedish judiciary.  He then joined the Ministry of Justice where he eventually became Director of the Division for Administrative and Constitutional Law.  In 1981, Mr. Corell was appointed Chief Legal Officer of the Ministry.  He was Ambassador and Under-Secretary for Legal and Consular Affairs in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1984 to 1994.

Hans Corell served as U.N. Under-Secretary-General from March 1994 to March 2004.  In 2004, he retired from public life and later joined Sweden's largest law firm, Mannheimer Swartling, as Senior Counsel.  Corell is engaged in the work of the International Bar Association and the International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life at Brandeis University.  He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at Lund University, Sweden.
