Hofstra Law to honor Nassau County Attorney at 20th Annual Public Justice Foundation Auction

Hofstra Law School, Hempstead, N.Y. —

Hofstra Law School is proud to hold the 20th Annual Public Justice Foundation (PJF) Auction on Thursday, April 2, 2009.  The silent auction begins at 9 a.m., the dinner at 5:30 p.m. and the live auction at 7 p.m.  PJF is a student-run organization that supports summer fellowships for students working nonpaying jobs in the public sector.  For more information, visit law.hofstra.edu/PJF.

This year’s auction will honor Lorna B. Goodman ’75 with the 2009 PJF Outstanding Alumni Award.  Goodman serves as the Nassau County Attorney.  From 1976 to 2001, she worked for the New York City Law Department in various roles from Deputy Chief of the Tort Division to Chief of the Affirmative Litigation Division.  Throughout her career, Goodman has fought for fair treatment of local citizens.  Past honorees David Weissman ‘90 and Kent Moston ‘75 will serve as Honorary Alumni Co-Chairs of the event.

“The PJF Auction is our main event of the year.  The more successful the auction, the more we are able to support Hofstra students helping the community over the summer,” said PJF Co-President Roya Vasseghi who worked with the Unemployment Action Center in Manhattan last summer.  “It was a great experience and something I would have been unable to do had I not received funding from PJF.”

Hofstra Law School Dean Nora V. Demleitner shared Roya’s sentiments.  “Those contributing to the auction impact their communities by funding our PJF Fellows who will work with an otherwise underserved clientele,” she said.

Hofstra Law was recently named one of the country’s best public interest law schools by preLaw magazine, a national publication aimed at prospective law students.   Among the 75 law schools that made the list, Hofstra ranked 11th.
