Hundreds celebrate life of Hofstra Law Professor David A. Diamond

Hofstra Law School, Hempstead, N.Y. — Hundreds gathered at Hofstra Law School to honor the life of Professor David A. Diamond, who passed away in September 2008.  The speakers included Professor Diamond’s wife Shelley Sherman ‘77, Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz, Hofstra Law Dean Nora V. Demleitner, Rev. Maureen C. Kessler and Professors Lawrence W. Kessler, John D. Gregory and Ronald H. Silverman.  A webcast of the event can be viewed on http://law.hofstra.edu/FacultyStaff/DiamondMemorial/index.html.

“It’s very moving to come back to Hofstra Law School where it all began 34 years ago,” said Sherman, an alumna of the school.  “David loved spending his time at the law school where thinking and ideas dominated.”

Rabinowitz described Professor Diamond as a “perfect and spectacular colleague.”  The University president, a former dean and professor of Hofstra Law School, taught civil procedure alongside Diamond for many years.  “He was a brilliant man,” said Rabinowitz.

Professor Diamond was also remembered for his “wonderful sense of humor,” said Dean Demleitner.  “He enriched our community and he was undoubtedly the soul of this institution.”

Hofstra Law School is establishing The David Diamond Memorial Scholarship Fund to recognize second year law students who have demonstrated a commitment to public service and/or trial advocacy.  To donate, visit www.law.hofstra.edu/DavidDiamondCelebration.

A professor at Hofstra Law since 1974, Diamond taught and wrote in the civil procedure and trial practice area, family law and public education.  He was co-director of The Northeast Regional Trial Practice Program of the National Insitute for Trial Advocacy.  He was a member of the Board of Directors of Mobilization for Youth Legal Services where he was once employed as chief welfare attorney and later as director of the law reform and case unit.
