Hofstra University School of Law, Hempstead, NY: Hofstra Law School Associate Professor Katrina Fischer Kuh is leading the charge against global warming. Recently, Kuh joined the Task Force on Global Warming, created by the New York State Bar Association to address the profound impact climate change is having on the natural environment and ecosystems.

“Climate change is the most significant environmental issue of our time,” said Kuh who became interested in the group because of her “great respect for the chair of the task force, Michael B. Gerrard, for whom I worked at Arnold & Porter before joining Hofstra's faculty,” she said.

The Task Force on Global Warming will be co-sponsored by the Association’s Environmental Law Section, chaired by Joan Leary Matthews, Associate Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Created by Association President Bernice K. Leber (Arent Fox LLP) to address one of her key presidential initiatives, the task force will identify specific areas of legal reform needed to combat global warming, with an eye toward educating policy makers and the public about its far-reaching effects.

The task force will prepare a report that covers the current state of the law and will recommend any appropriate reforms with the aim of ensuring that our laws, policies and practices are designed in a constructive manner to reduce profound climate changes.

Kuh is not only a community activist, she is a scholar. At Hofstra Law, Kuh teaches “Global Climate Change and U.S. Law,” which considers issues that the task force will analyze, including how to best structure policy to avoid climate change.

A native of Boise, Idaho, Kuh graduated summa cum laude from Yale University in 1997 and returned to Yale for law school, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law and Policy Review.

After graduating from the Yale Law School in 2002, Kuh served as a law clerk to Judge Charles S. Haight of the District Court for the Southern District of New York (2002-2003) and Judge Diana Gribbon Motz of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit (2003-2004).

Prior to joining the Hofstra faculty in 2007, Kuh worked in the environmental and litigation practice groups in the New York office of Arnold & Porter LLP. Her practice included defending smart growth zoning against constitutional challenges and assisting clients in the negotiation and implementation of complex site remediation.
