Biography

Efthimios Parasidis teaches courses related to intellectual property, health law and bioethics. His scholarship is focused on emerging issues in intellectual property that synthesize the disciplines of bioethics and public health policy with intellectual property law

Professor Parasidis was recently selected as a 2008 Health Law Scholar by the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics and the St. Louis University Center for Health Law Studies. In the fall, he will be presenting his paper on a legal and bioethical analysis of patent protection for observations of neural activity. Four Scholars are selected each year for this prestigious award, based on a committee’s blind review of an abstract of a work-in progress.

Professor Parasidis serves as a consultant to the American College of Physicians, where he focuses his work on financial conflicts of interest in the medical and pharmaceutical professions. Prior to joining the Hofstra faculty, Professor Parasidis was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research on the legal and ethical issues of medical informed consent policies and practices in Greece. He has had articles published in the Harvard Journal on Medical Ethics and the Texas Intellectual Property Law Journal.

In addition to his scholarly work, Professor Parasidis has significant experience as a litigator in the public and private sectors. He was an Assistant Attorney General under Eliot Spitzer and Andrew M. Cuomo, where he served as lead counsel for over 300 cases in state and federal courts at both the trial and appellate levels. Professor Parasidis was an associate in the Litigation group of Jones Day and the Intellectual Property group of Dickstein Shapiro. At these law firms, Professor Parasidis focused his practice on intellectual property counseling and litigation, as well as mass tort litigation

Professor Parasidis earned his B.A. in philosophy, magna cum laude, from The College of New Jersey (1997), where he focused his studies on the neuroscientific and biological roots of human thought and behavior. He then earned an M.BE. from the University of Pennsylvania Center for Bioethics (2000), and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (2000). During law school, Professor Parasidis was a Legal Writing Instructor and a senior editor of the University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Economic Law. He was very active in pro bono and community service activities, earning the Penn Law Public Service Award upon graduation.
