Biography

Professor Halper combines a busy law practice with his courses at Hofstra University School of Law, a real estate business, and expanding his extensive list of published articles and books. Currently, a Distinguished Scholar in Residence and Visiting Professor at Hofstra, he is also President of American Development & Consulting Corp. (a Greenvale, New York real estate consultancy).

As a founding partner and later senior partner of the midtown Manhattan law firm, Zissu Halper & Martin, he focused on leases, real estate development contracts and construction contracts. After retiring from the law firm in 1987, he served as Vice President-Development of Hartford, Connecticut-based Chase Enterprises where he contributed to that company’s office building and shopping center developments activities.

An active member of the American Bar Association's Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section for many years, Professor Halper was the founder of the Section’s Commercial & Industrial Leasing Group and (from 1986 through 1994) Chairman of the Group and its predecessor, the Commercial Leasing Committee. From 1994 to 2000, he was a member of the Section’s Supervisory Council. In 1999, he founded the Section’s Community Outreach Program and currently serves as Chair of the Section’s Community Outreach Standing Committee. In cooperation with minority and ethnic bar associations around the country, the Committee organizes free continuing legal education programs to enhance skills and opportunities for members of racial, religious, and ethnic minorities.

In 1976, Emanuel Halper was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the ABA in recognition of a distinguished contribution to public understanding of the American system of law and justice. His contributions to the Community Outreach Program were recognized in 2005 when he received ABA’s Spirit of Excellence Award and again in 2006 when he accepted ABA’s Partnership Award on behalf of the Section.

Professor Halper is the author of a treatise on shopping center leases, another treatise on ground leasing, and a book of short stories and essays on real estate people and their transactions. In addition, more than 100 of his articles have been published in professional journals and magazines since his first in 1961.
