Biography
Kirk Burkhalter is the Visiting Assistant Professor of Academic Support at Hofstra School of Law. He teaches Legal Methods, a course designed to promote effective, independent learning and focuses on those skills necessary for success in law school. He also helps law students adjust to the academic demands of law school and develop the skills that enable them to realize their full academic potential through workshops, seminars and individual counseling, and conducts workshops and seminars that focus on the analytical and organizational skills specific to preparation for the New York State Bar Examination.Professor Burkhalter earned a B.A. in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and his J.D. from New York Law School. Upon graduation from law school, Professor Burkhalter worked as an associate in the Corporate Securities and Finance practice group at Pillsbury Winthrop LLP, where he represented underwriters and issuers in securities offerings, buyers and sellers in mergers and acquisitions, and borrowers and lenders in credit facilities. After Pillsbury, Professor Burkhalter returned to New York Law School, as the Associate Director of Academic Affairs and an Adjunct professor, where he provided academic counseling and taught a course entitled The Principles of Legal Analysis. Professor Burkhalter has also taught as an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Prior to law school, Professor Burkhalter served twenty years in the New York City Police Department, retiring as a Detective First Grade. He spent the majority of his career with the NYPD, conducting long term investigations into organized criminal enterprises, recruiting, training and supervising police officers for deep-undercover assignments, and investigating criminal cases involving domestic, ecological and industrial terrorism.
