Hofstra Aid
Hofstra offers a variety of institutional merit scholarships, need-based grants and loans that are awarded on the basis of merit or financial need. The most common forms of aid administered by the Office of Financial Aid are:
Honors Scholarships
Hofstra Law School awards Merit Scholarships to provide scholarship assistance to entering students from whom we have reason to expect a high level of academic success. Merit scholarships are awarded annually for one academic year and are renewable for any semester during the remainder of law school enrollment, provided that the student maintains a cumulative grade point average of 3.25. Half of a scholarship is applied as credit to a student's fall semester tuition charges, and the other half is applied to the spring semester tuition charges. A portion of these merit scholarships comes from the funds of Hofstra Law School’s endowed scholarships. No application is required for these scholarships. Please note Merit Scholarships may not be used toward study abroad and/or the winter or summer sessions.
Hofstra Law Grant
Each year, a limited number of partial tuition
grants are awarded on the basis of need. The awards are made primarily to
full-time day students.
Hofstra Law Loan
This was established in order to offer needy students additional subsidized funding beyond the grants. The loans range from $2,000 to $7,000 annually. Hofstra Law Loans are awarded on the basis of need and students must reapply for the Hofstra Loan each year. Hofstra Loans carry a fixed subsidized interest rate of 7%. Interest does not accrue while you are in school or during the nine month grace period following graduation or withdrawal from Hofstra. The five year repayment period begins following this nine month grace period.
Dean's Scholars Program
This program is designed to recognize outstanding academic achievement with opportunities to enrich your education and, in some cases, provide financial support.
Among the academic benefits, Dean’s Scholars receive invitations to meet with visiting scholars and speakers and to attend faculty workshops. They are invited to participate in upcoming law school conferences. Interested Dean's Scholars may be matched with faculty members in areas of interest to assist faculty members with their research.
Additionally, this program provides an opportunity to recognize student achievement financially with $7,500 (full-time) and 5,000 (part-time) in merit scholarships. Qualified rising 2L students will be awarded a Dean’s Scholarship for their second year, provided that they finish the spring semester of the first year with a cumulative academic rank (not rounded off) that places them in the upper 10% of their entire graduating class (all full-time and part-time students with a common anticipated graduation date).
Half of the award is applied as credit to the student’s fall semester tuition charges and the balance of the award to spring semester tuition charges. The scholarship is renewable for the remainder of law school enrollment, provided that the student maintains a 3.25 cumulative grade point average.
Be advised that grades earned in the summer session between the last completed spring semester and the upcoming fall semester are not considered in determining academic rank eligibility for scholarship award and renewal. Furthermore, changes in rank that occur in the summer as a result of student attrition between the end of a spring semester and the start of the next fall semester are not considered for scholarship award and renewal.
