Timeline: Preparing and Applying for Aid
| October 2008 through March 2009 |
This is the time period during which most outside scholarship application deadlines fall. It is suggested that you do a www.fastweb.org search to see which scholarships you may be eligible to apply for. |
| January 2009 | January is the earliest month for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the NeedAccess Application for next academic year. Normal processing time for the FAFSA and NeedAccess Applications is four to six weeks. |
| January through May 2009 |
This is the suggested period for students who are New York State residents to complete and return applications for New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). Applications will automatically be sent to students by New York State once their FAFSA is processed, provided they indicated they are New York state residents. |
| February 2009 |
Financial Aid Workshop – Debt Management Seminar This workshop is designed to provide you with information that can help you budget for the upcoming academic year. We will also discuss strategies that will help you reduce your debt and the long term repercussions of not managing your debt. |
| March 2009 |
Loan Repayment Workshop If you have federal student loans you are strongly urged to join us for an informative and educational session on your federal student loan repayment options. This workshop is designed to help you make the right choices when it comes to managing the repayment of your federal student loans. This session will be geared towards graduating students. However, if you are not graduating and you have questions about repayment you are encouraged to attend. |
| March 2009 | Financial Aid Workshop – Preparing for 2009-2010 This workshop is designed to provide you with information that can help you prepare for the upcoming academic year. We will take a look at the Financial Aid Process, how to construct and live on a student budget, updates regarding the FAFSA, available loan programs, work-study options, a brief overview of credit reports and external scholarships. This workshop will be repeated. |
| April 2009 | Loan Repayment Workshop
If you have federal student loans you are strongly urged to join us for an informative and educational session on your federal student loan repayment options. This workshop is designed to help you make the right choices when it comes to managing the repayment of your student loans. This sessions will be geared towards graduating students. However, if you are not graduating and you have questions about repayment you are encouraged to attend. |
| March though June 2009 |
Students will receive Office of Financial Aid Award letters. Students must sign one award letter, indicating which awards they accept or decline, and return it to the Office of Financial Aid. Students may also accept their financial aid award online, however this once accepted any modifications or amendments must be done on paper. |
| April 1, 2009 | Deadline to submit the 2009-2010 Financial Aid Application for all admitted and continuing students. Students admitted after April 1st will have 30 days to complete their Financial Aid Application. |
| April 30, 2009 | Deadline for current students to submit Stafford or private loan applications for the current (2008-2009) academic year. Loan applications received after this date may not be processed. |
| May 1, 2009 | Deadline for New York state residents to file applications for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for the current academic year. |
| June 30, 2009 | Financial Aid file needs to be complete by this date to avoid late fees for the fall 2009 semester. |
