This program instructs students at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University about all phases of criminal law practice through placements in prosecutorial and legal aid offices. Criminal externs work approximately 12 to 15 hours per week during the fall or spring semester (or a minimum of 200 hours during the summer) for agencies such as:
Nassau, Queens and Kings County District Attorneys' offices
New York City and Nassau and Suffolk County Legal Aid offices
Students may be exposed to a wide variety of experiences, including legal writing and research, case investigation, witness interviewing and courtroom advocacy.
Students are supervised by an attorney at the particular agency and by Hofstra Law faculty directors (who also conduct weekly seminars).
