Information for Field Placement Supervisors

Information for Field Placement Supervisors

Becoming a Field Placement Supervisor

If you are interested in serving as a field placement supervisor, please contact Franca Sachs, director of the Externship Program, in early March for fall semester placements, in early October for spring semester placements and in late January for summer placements.

This will ensure ample time for Hofstra Law to post the opportunity and for you to interview potential externs.

Memorandum of Understanding

Once you interview and select an extern, you will be asked to sign a Memorandum of Understanding.

Externship and Pro Bono Networking Event

We encourage field placement supervisors to participate in the Externship and Pro Bono Networking Event, held each fall at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law.

During the event, you will have the opportunity to meet directly with Hofstra Law students interested in securing a field placement, provide information about your organization and the opportunities available, and informally interview and collect resumes from interested students.

For More Information

To learn more about the Externship Program and associated requirements, we encourage you to review the Introduction to the Externship Program for Field Placement Supervisors and the Externship Program Manual.

You should feel free to contact Franca Sachs if you have any additional questions.

“I could not have asked for a more rewarding experience than the one I gained as an extern at Liz Claiborne Inc. It was a wonderful experience, and I would recommend the Externship Program to anyone who would like to gain experience in a specialized area where employment opportunities may not otherwise be available.”

— Renada Riley King ’09

“The Hofstra Law Externship Program is remarkable, and I would encourage all students to participate in it. I am truly appreciative of this program, as it has allowed me to experience what the practice of law is like in the ‘real world,’ and apply the theoretical knowledge that I learned in law school, and develop the skills necessary to be an attorney.”

— Michael Skepner ’10

“As an intern with the New York City Police Department’s Legal Bureau — Civil Section, I was treated as a staff attorney, being assigned cases and expected to see them through from intake to motion submission. From gaining significant legal research and writing experience to negotiating the basics of court motion submissions, along with working with knowledgeable attorneys with whom I retain contact, the experience with the NYPD Legal Bureau fulfilled all my externship goals.”
