International Moot Arbitration Team

Held every spring in Vienna, Austria, and Hong Kong, China, the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and Vis (East) Commercial Arbitration Moot brings together top law students from the world over to foster study in the areas of international commercial law and arbitration. Through its application of a concrete problem concerning a hypothetical client, the two Vis Moots train law students in methods of alternative dispute resolution. The International Moot Arbitration Team prepares a memorandum for claimant, a memorandum for respondent and then sends students to compete in oral hearings at the Moots.

Hundreds of renowned scholars and world class practitioners from different jurisdictions serve as judges for the competition. The competition is sponsored by Pace University, Queen Mary-University of London, the University of Stockholm, the University of Vienna, the Austria Arbitration Association, the Federal Economic Chamber of Austria, and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (Secretary of UNCITRAL). In 2008 the competition included 204 law schools hailing from 52 countries. Hofstra’s award-winning teams have competed at the Vis Moot in Vienna since 2004 and at the Vis (East) Moot in Hong Kong since 2008. In 2008, Hofstra’s team claimed the top award for “Memorandum by Respondent” in the Vis (East) Moot competition, besting 51 other teams from around the world.

Associate Professor Law Julian Ku and Special Professor of Law Seth Presser coach the team. "I am really proud of our team," said Professor Ku, "This team of students worked tirelessly all year and achieved great results. They really represented Hofstra well in what is probably the most competitive moot competition in the world."
