Membership

Our membership consists of the finest students from each class. First-year students in the full-time program who are in the top five percent of their section, based on their first-year cumulative grade point average, receive an invitation to join. The five winners of our annual writing competition are automatically invited to join as well. The remainder of our membership is selected based upon a combination of students' grade point average and writing competition score. Ultimately, the selection process is governed by the Hofstra Law Review Association Amended and Restated Bylaws. For further information, please contact the Managing Office.

Eligibility to Compete in the Hofstra Law Review Writing Competition

The Hofstra Law Review holds an annual writing competition, held the week after spring finals. Eligibility to compete in this competition is as follows:

Full-Time Students

All students completing their first or second year, enrolled in the full-time division are eligible to compete.

Part-Time Day Students

Eligible part-time students include:

Students who transfer from the part-time day program to the full-time program following their first academic year. This means students who have accumulated twenty-three (23) credits at the end of their first two academic semesters, have satisfactorily completed Legal Writing and Research, have transferred to full-time status, and are registered to complete the traditional first-year curriculum by the end of the summer term prior to their second year;

Students enrolled in the four-year, part-time day program who have satisfactorily completed their first and second year, which includes the Legal Writing and Research course as well as all of the traditional first-year curriculum courses.

Part-Time Evening Students

First-year, part-time students in the evening division are not eligible to compete immediately following the completion of their first academic year because they will not have yet taken Legal Writing and Research coursework. Students in the evening division may compete in the Law Review Writing Competition following the completion of their second academic year. However, students in the evening division who will be transferring to full-time status may participate in the Hofstra Law Review Transfer Writing Competition, held at the beginning of the fall semester, provided that they complete Legal Writing and Research by the end of the summer term, prior to their second year.

Transfer Students

Transfer students may compete in the Hofstra Law Review Transfer Writing Competition, held at the beginning of the fall semester.

"Note On" Membership

A student may be invited to join on the basis of submission of a completed article deemed to be of publishable quality by the board of editors. The Hofstra Law Review will issue a call for student notes on a quarterly basis. Articles from third-year students in the full-time program or fourth-year students in the part-time program must be submitted by the end of the second week of classes in the fall semester.
